Man killed in Colorado Springs during honorary cross-country walk

October 14, 2013 by Lance M. Sears

Colorado Springs attorneyAs wrongful death attorneys in Colorado Springs, Colorado, we’ve unfortunately experienced our fair share of tragic events.  But what follows is a truly heartbreaking story.

According to a report from KKTV, Mr. Joe Bell, an Oregon resident, was traveling through Colorado as part of a coast to coast walk.  Bell set out on this journey in an effort to memorialize his 15-year-old son who had taken his own life as a result of relentless bullying.

After tragically losing his son, Bell felt he had two choices: he could simply lie down and give up, or, he could do something to ensure his son’s death was not in vain. It was then that Mr. Bell decided he would walk across this great nation spreading his anti-bullying message and sharing his son’s tragic story.  Bell had already traveled through Boulder and Denver, sharing with all who would listen to his literal and figurative journey to find and encourage peace.

However, and sadly, this awe-inspiring story took a heartbreaking turn on October 10th when Mr. Bell, just outside of Kit Carson, was killed after being struck by a semi-truck.  Kenneth Raven, the truck’s driver, had fallen asleep. According to the Colorado State Patrol, Bell was declared dead on the scene and Raven was cited with careless driving resulting in death.

Joe Bell’s death is truly a tragedy in the Colorado Springs, La Grande and Oregon communities. We hope and pray that this man’s death will not be in vain and that his message of peace will endure for years to come.
