President Obama signed the Food Safety Modernization Act into law on January 4th, which gives the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) the power to recall food that may be tainted, access records from food producers, and and quarantine geographical areas. This law also requires the creation of a consumer-friendly recall search engine. In keeping with the new food safety law, the FDA has recently revamped its website to make it easier to search for recalled foods and track foods that may be making your family sick.
The FDA’s newly revamped site also features a frequently asked questions section, graphics, and videos with explanations on implementation, and information on upcoming public meetings.
Healthwatch, The Hill’s healthcare blog, reports that “about 128,000 Americans are hospitalized every year because of contaminated food…and 3,000 die.”
